The International Pacific Halibut Commission has announced our total allowable catch of Pacific Halibut will remain the same for 2024. While our seasons now are much better than the 5 or 6 day derby seasons we used to have, it’s still only 20 days or so that we can pursue this favorite of table fare. Coming to Westport at 3am and finding the entire dock area alive with boats warming up and deckhands shuttling bait and gear is a real eye opener!
Halibut fishing dates are filling fast, and although we have the same quota as last season, good weather could mean a shorter season. We have kept our Halibut trip price at just a dollar more than last year at $387 for larger boats and $527 for 6 man boats with electric reels. If we have time remaining after achieving a limit of Halibut, we target Deep Water Lingcod.
Never caught a Halibut? Westport is a great place to fish for Halibut, has a great success rate, and is only a two hour drive from the South Puget Sound region. Mutineer Charters has a boat for every preference, from our fast 6 passenger boat with a full walk around deck, to our 55 foot 16 passenger boat. Every boat has an experienced Captain with a decade or 4 under their belt of fishing in Westport. Opening day of Halibut is May 2 and runs 3 days a week. Halibut Regulations can be interesting to find, feel free to ask us. Westport is in WDFW Marine area 2.
Be sure to keep your eyes open when you’re out there, Halibut are found most often on the edge of the continental shelf where its depth changes rapidly. This is an area where cold deep water wells up from thousands of feet and creates a great environment not only for our target fish, but marine mammals like Humpback Whales, Sperm Whales and Fin Whales, Pacific White Sided Dolphins, Dall’s Porpoises, and Northern Fur Seals. It’s also a great way to add to a birdwatchers bucket list with Albatrosses, Fulmars, and Petrels.
Looking to get out fishing on a tighter budget? We have Spring Lingcod trips starting at $217. Spring Lingcod trips depart at 6am and are 8 to 10 hours unless limits of fish are achieved sooner. The target is 2 Lingcod and 7 Rockfish (Sea Bass) per person. Opening day of Lingcod Season in Westport is March 9.
As always we welcome Private Parties as well as individual anglers.
