Offshore Fly Fishing
Fly Fishing for Albacore Tuna
This is not your typical fly fishing trip. It's a high-intensity offshore experience for anglers who want something truly unique — chasing hard-fighting albacore tuna on fly gear in the open Pacific. Captain Nick Clayton, with 31 years of fly fishing experience and 17 focused on saltwater, will put you on fish and guide you through every step.
What to Expect
Upon reaching productive water, we troll with fly rods as an extremely effective way to locate schools of albacore. When a fish is hooked on the troll, we stop the boat and switch to casting. The goal is to keep the school fired up around the boat using live anchovy chum, so we can present flies and hook fish on the cast.
This fishery doesn't require long, pinpoint-accurate casts — it requires doing whatever it takes to get your fly in the water. Backhanded casts, roll casts, off-shoulder casts: whatever works. We'll continue working a school until the fish move on, then go back to trolling to find the next one.
When conditions are right, schools will be visible on the surface — crashing bait, jumping, boiling. On those days we abandon trolling entirely and run-and-gun, chasing visible fish. These are some of the most exciting fly fishing moments available anywhere on the West Coast.
Once an albacore takes your fly, you'll immediately understand why a 12-weight is required. These are powerful, fast fish. Landing them quickly matters — the faster one is in the boat, the sooner you're back casting to the next one.
Gear Recommendations
Customers are encouraged to bring their own gear when possible. With advance notice, gear can be provided by the captain. Hand-tied flies will be available on all trips, though you're welcome to bring your own.
- Rod: 12-weight saltwater fly rod
- Reel: Any saltwater-capable reel with a strong drag, able to hold 200–300 yards of backing plus a 12-wt fly line
- Line: Fast-sinking integrated shooting head — Airflo Big Game Depth Finder, Rio Leviathan, Orvis Depth Charge, or similar
- Flies: Baitfish patterns 2–6" in varied profiles and colors (Deceivers, Half and Halfs, Clousers, Flat Wings) and squid patterns — these are the most productive day in, day out
Fly fishing trips are available by request. Have questions about technique, gear, or what to expect? Captain Nick is happy to talk through the details before you head out.

Finally got a chance to fish with them and they exceeded my expectations.
Awesome crew, boat and experience.
After the flounder we moved to another spot in deeper water to fish for ling cod. This spot was in deeper water so we couldn't anchor but the skipper did a great job of keeping us over the fish. We limited out with 2 nice size ling cods per person and a few extras for the crew.
The deckhand did a great job keeping us rigged up and baited. He also filleted all the fish for a good price.
The only downer was my mistake. I like to follow the track of the boat using my phone and a marine map. Apparently, this is a huge no no. They are concerned with people stealing their spots. I totally understood the skippers concern, so I turned off my phone and put it away. As angry as he got, I'd think he would put up a sign or something telling folks that gps tracking is verboten. Or maybe something in the terms and conditions.
I would definitely go bottom fishing on this boat again. The skipper has good knowledge and boat skills. If there are bottom fish to be had, he will put you on them.
I have fished with the Slammer before. This time I took two of my grandsons (16 and 11) out for their first trip. They caught a lot of fish, the deck hands were great with them. They had such a good time they want to go with me again.
I gave my grands two rules - don’t fall overboard and don’t puke on grandma. Good thing they followed the rules! No puking at all! Lol
Make sure you layer up as it is cold and can be windy in the AM and hot in the afternoon. The seas were rough in the morning so take medicine if you are prone to motion sickness!
Thanks guys for something to remember.

Capt. Rhett seriously knows his stuff (I’m pretty sure he’s a fish whisperer, cause we were always on fish), He & his Excellent Crew took care of our large group (some who knew what they were doing and many who did not) with ease.
We happened to hit some pretty rough water, as the winds unexpectedly came up, but still we almost all came home with our limit of fish.
Thank you, Mutineer Charters, for a wonderful day of exciting Fishing and a freezer full of Good Eats!! We’ll be back!
